Hands Over Fully Furnished Two-bedroom Apartment to Taxi Driver who knocked down two robbers

The Ministry of Water Resource, works and Housing has handed over a fully furnished two-bedroom apartment to the taxi driver who knocked down two robbers to foil their attempt to rob an employee of the Koala Supermarket in Accra.

The presentation is in fulfillment of a promise made by the President John Dramani Mahama after the taxi driver, whose name has been given as only Nana Yaw for security reason, thwarted the broad daylight mugging on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
Presenting the keys of the house to him in Accra at a location that has been withheld also for security reasons, the sector minister, Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, said maintaining law and order was not the preserve of only the security agencies.

He commended Nana Yaw for his boldness and called on all members of the public to emulate his example.

“The President has been so impressed about the driver’s exploit, gesture and his confidence and has, therefore, decided to show the nation’s appreciation by offering him this fully furnished apartment to serve as a motivation for members of the public to be patriotic,” he said.

After taking delivery of the apartment and inspecting it to the admiration of the gathering, a brother of Nana Yaw expressed his appreciation to the President and the sector minister for delivering on their word.

Background

Nana Yaw knocked down the two gun-wielding robbers after they attacked and robbed a Koala employee near the Lands Commission after allegedly monitoring her movement and trailing her.

The taxi driver, who witnessed the incident, rammed his taxi into the motorbike the robbers were using to escape.

He also prevailed upon an angry group not to lynch the suspects.

The two, identified as Abaliku Sannie, 35, and Oko Quaicoo, 30, were on a motorbike when they shot the administrative assistant of Koala after she had left the Cantonments branch of the retail company.

Despite the predicament, the two kept shooting until a soldier, who chanced upon the incident, intervened and made sure they were arrested after which the robbery victim, who sustained gunshot wounds on her leg, was taken to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment.

Later, the damaged Toyota Corolla, used by the taxi driver, was towed to the Cantonments Police Station.

Following what was widely described as a heroic act by the driver, the management of the Koala Supermarket presented him with a new car while the Vice-President, Kwesi B. Amissah-Arthur, promised him a house by courtesy of the President, Mr Mahama, when he hosted Nana Yaw at the Flagstaff House.
