We need to talk about abortion more - Shirley Frimpong Manso

Ghanaian movie Director Shirley Frimpong Manso believes it is time the sensitization on abortion increases.

Shirley, who was speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the premiere of the 7th and 8th episodes of her political drama ‘Shampaign’ said, the subject must be discussed more if the country wanted to prevent more deaths through illegal abortion.
She added that the youth, especially young girl must understand that the act is a choice and not something evil.

“The truth of the matter is if we make it into an evil thing, then everybody hides to do it. But when we talk about it and engage in some conversation about it, then when in that situation especially as a young girl, you will know what to so we are able to cut down on death through abortion by wack doctors.

Abortion should be a choice like everything else although it might depend on the circumstances. It is not as simply as don’t allow abortion, you must look at all the angles.”

In a further interview with some cast members in the movie, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, who in ‘Shampaign’ played the role of Deborah Ceaser; a smart sophisticated highly intelligent daughter of a Member of Parliament and running mate for the presidential candidate said, every woman should have a choice over her body. She added that it’s not in the place of the community to judge people who opt for abortion because it is a choice.

On Friday, the Silverbird Cinema at Accra mall was packed with movie lovers who have followed the Shampaign series since the first episode. The 7 & 8 episode centered on a young girl who out of fear of stigmatization lied about her pregnancy, claiming she was raped. This sparked a national debate forcing all political parties to declare their stance on abortion.

Shampaign will premiere throughout the week every day from 7pm to 9pm at the West Hills Mall and Accra Mall for Gh30 per ticket. This original movie stars Joselyn Dumas, J.O.T Agyeman, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Nana Aba Anamoah, John Dumelo, Fred Amugi, Zynnell Zuh, Akorfa Adjeani-Asiedu, Anima Amisa Amoah, as well as many other stellar talents.
